Katoh Gizan

 

As a Buddhist sculptor and practices Buddhist rules for years, Gizan makes Buddhist statues based on rules of rites. He aims to carve spirited statues of Buddha with Buddhism’s concept of not-self (Anatta). Buddhists worship statues and pray in front of them, therefore its essence must not be lost in the creating process. He says, ‘During the process of carving Buddha statues, I refine and purify myself to become as transparent as possible.’

 

Gizan also creates sculptures, as an art form, with his skills and experience in Buddhist woodcarving, he showed a keen sense of how to express his thoughts and the current state of the world in his works. He reveres the natural world in every way, focusing on the truth of existence, you may deepen your understanding of yourself through his works.
